Generation 1: Our ancestor was Jane McDonald, born ca. 1776 in New Jersey. She married Daniel McShane ca. 1795 in New Jersey, and they were the parents of eight children. Jane died in 1842 in Fayette County, PA.

Generation 2: Eliza McShane, daughter of Daniel McShane and Jane McDonald, was born 27 August 1820, in Pennsylvania, and married a German immigrant, John Dedrick, born 8 March 1808. Their first child, Catherine Lucretia Dedrick, was born 6 May 1840 in Uniontown, Fayette County, Pennsylvania.

John and Eliza McShane Dedrick, and their children, left Pennsylvania between 1849-1852, and joined Eliza's father and siblings who had previously moved to Linn County, IA. John and Eliza were enumerated in Linn County, IA, on a special census taken there in 1852. By 1860, John and Eliza Dedrick and their children had moved to Lykins County (now Miami County), Kansas.

Generation 3: Catherine Lucretia Dedrick married Thomas Desom Rice on 8 December 1861 at the residence of his father, Thomas Rice, Sr., in Mound Township, Miami County, Kansas. Catherine and Thomas were the parents of five children, born before the Thomas' untimely death in 1872. Catherine was left with five children were ages one through 10.

Catherine got a job cooking at Osawatomie, KS, at the Kansas State Hospital for the Insane, and drove her horse and buggy there six miles each way, every day. Catherine died in 1912 at the home of her daughter, Rosa Koontz, in Parker, Miami County, KS.

Generation 4: Nancy Jane "Rosa" Rice, daughter of Thomas Rice, Sr., and Catherine Lucretia Dedrick, was born in 1869 in Osawatomie, Miami County, KS, and died 9 May 1911 in Columbus, Cherokee County, KS. Rosa married Cicero Baxter Koontz, a native of Rowan County, NC, on 20 December 1886, at Mound, Miami County, KS.

I am indebted to Gale M. Roberts, who the researched the family of Francis McShane, born 1717 in County Tyrone, Ireland; to Aubrey and Lorean McShane, who shared their repository of McShane documents with me; and to Robyn Orchard and Juli Jarvis who have collaborated with me on the family of Thomas Rice and Catherine Lucretia Dedrick. I also appreciate the efforts of J. R. Johnson, president of the McShane clan, who maintains the McShane website at: Clan McShane.
